Short Talk (Question 1- 7)

Hi, my name is Lee Johnson. I’ve been a forest ranger in the National Park for about six years. I really like working in the national park, there are so many rare and special animals that live in the forest. In the forests, the most famous large animals are the chimpanzee and the gorilla. These are apes, not monkeys, which mean they don’t have tails, and they are the closest relatives to humans, and I’m sure you know we share about 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees. The only dangerous animals we have in the park are the alligators. They’re actually really beautiful animals, but they like to hide quietly at the edge of the river, usually waiting for a deer to stop for a drink of water so they can jump out and grab it. There is also a small group of hippopotamus living around the large lake in the center of the park. They look gentle, but they’re really powerful.
Probably the biggest problem we have in the park is illegal hunting, and it’s really gotten worse in the last few years, so we’re trying to educate local people about the need for conservation. The hunters are usually local people who know the area, but they’re actually not the problem. The problem is rich people in the cities who think it’s fun or fashionable to eat rare animals and who can pay a lot of money to do it. Almost all of the wildlife in the park is endangered, and I think it’s incredibly selfish to eat them. Every time one of these animals is killed, one arrogant person in the city gets to feel important for a short time, but what those people are really doing is stealing something that belongs to all of us. In just a few more years, many of these species will be extinct and our country will lose something so important and vital to its identity and culture.
What does it mean for our country if there are no animals left? Someday I hope to have grandchildren, and what do I say to them? “I’m sorry there are no monkeys or cheetahs anymore for you to see or dream about, but some idiot in the city wanted to show off to his friends”. That’s pretty terrible when you think about it, so I hope everyone listening to this tells their friends not to eat at wildlife restaurants and to not be shy about criticizing people who do.

Good evening, and welcome to Sports Night. It’s been a big week for sports fans, and we’ve got lots to talk about tonight. Let’s start with football, where one piece of big news this week was the decision of Chelsea to sign Roberto DiMatteo as its new manager. DiMatteo is expected to sign a one-year contract, and it is hoped that he can fix some of the team’s recent problems. In motorcycle racing, the shocking news is that last year’s world champion, 26 year-old Casey Stoner has announced he will retire at the end of this season. Despite being in top form, Stoner said he would like to spend more time with his family.

Hello, here is the European weather forecast. Most parts of the UK and France will have light rain showers and cloudy skies. Those rainstorms will get stronger and spread into Germany over the next few days, and temperatures will gradually get colder throughout Western Europe. That means there will be a lot of fog, so please be careful if you’re driving in the mountains. However, after the weekend we’re expecting temperatures to climb into the high teens, so warmer weather is just around the corner. South of the Alps, the satellite shows sunny weather for most of Italy. That storm system in the north may bring some strong winds to Italy and Spain, but no rain is expected.

Welcome back to the Eurovision Song Contest. It’s been a great evening so far, and we’ve heard some truly excellent performances from contestants from Austria, Belgium, and Sweden. And who can forget that incredible performance of ‘Danny Boy’ by the young singer from Ireland? Just 15 years old, and such an incredible voice. It’s going to be really hard for our voters to pick a winner. Up next we have two twin sisters from Poland who will sing a duet that is so beautiful, it might make you cry. So, don’t change the channel!

I just can’t believe I made it to the final round of American Idol! I’m so honored to be here. There have been so many great contestants and I’m really proud to have made it this far in the competition. For my final song, I’ll be singing ‘Your Song’ by Elton John. It’s a really challenging song, and I don’t know if the judges will like my interpretation of it, but all I can do is hope for the best! No matter if I win or lose tomorrow, I want to thank my family and friends for being so supportive and for giving me the confidence to get this far.

Good afternoon, this is the five o’clock news, broadcast live from WGBH, Boston’s best source for local news. There was a fire last night in an apartment building that left three families homeless, but thankfully no injuries were reported. The city council has approved a new environmental law which requires industrial businesses to clean their waste water before it goes into the sea. And, today was the first day of the tenth annual Boston Food Festival. The festival lasts for two more days, so make sure you go down to the park to try different foods from over 100 different restaurants.

Hello, today’s special guest is a young woman who has just finished riding a bicycle from the UK all the way across Asia to Singapore. Jilly Sherlock is a 30 year old who decided last year to take this huge trip by bicycle. Her trip took almost a full year, and she traveled through twenty three different countries. Although she had some difficulties along the way with bad weather and getting lost, she has many great stories about the people she met and the kindness of so many strangers who helped her along the way. She has just written a book about the trip, and we’re so happy to welcome her to the show.

Good evening everybody, and welcome to ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’! It’s going to be a great show tonight; we have a contestant from a small town in Nevada. Margaret Green is a schoolteacher, and as always, we’ll be asking her twelve different questions. Each question is worth more money than the one before, but they each get more difficult as we go. The contestant can stop playing at any time and keep the money they’ve won so far, but each time they choose to go to the next question, they risk losing everything they’ve won so far. So, let’s get ready to play Who Wants to be a Millionaire!
